SunRocket's demise leads to VOIP provider search
Post by indi on Jul 21, 2007 12:32:51 AM CST

SunRocket, the second largest VOIP (voice over IP) phone service provider, closed down earlier this week leaving more than 200,000 customers without phone service. There were no official notifications of this disruption of service from SunRocket until yesterday morning. Affected customers have been looking for alternative VOIP phone providers and switching on their own to companies like Packet 8, Vonage, ViaTalk and others.

SunRocket sent out an email today specifying 2 service providers that they mention as replacement service. A similar email was sent out from Sherwood Partners, the financial firm contracted to oversee the liquidation of SunRocket's assets. The email is below.

--------------------------------------------
"Dear Customers,

After significant effort by the Company to avoid this result, SunRocket is in the process of closing its operations and therefore will no longer be able to provide you with the phone service that you have been accustomed to. However, this email provides you with an opportunity to sign up with select service providers who we believe will offer outstanding replacement service

In order to assist you, we have entered into negotiations with a number of service providers. As a result of those negotiations, we have entered into agreements with 8x8, Inc., provider of the Packet8 service, and Unified Communications Corp., provider of Teleband service to offer you the best options and we are proud to recommend the following alternatives to you. Please make your decision to move to a new service provides immediately as future service is uncertain.

8x8/Packet8

The Packet8 Internet phone service incorporates patent protected technology from 8x8. Inc., a publicly traded company in business for more than 20 years. The service works in the same way as SunRocket.s and offers a virtually identical feature set.

Here is what I found out about the second company mentioned in the email "TeleBlend".

The domain TeleBlend.com was registered in Feb 2005. So they have been in Business for probably more than 2 years. However, domain registration does not necessarily mean "In Business".

Domain Name: TELEBLEND.COM
Created on: 14-Feb-05
Expires on: 31-Dec-09
Last Updated on: 18-Jul-07

Registered Name:
UnCommUm

Kennebunk, Maine 04043
United States

Teleblend seems to have acquired the service from SunRocket, because most SunRocket customers are finding that their phone service is up and running again this morning. However, neither TeleBlend or Packet8 are going to refund the money that customers have prepaid to SunRocket.

One way to recover the lost money is to call your credit card company if the SunRocket bill was charged to the credit card. Large credit card issuing banks like Chase have protection against such longer term contracts and have refunded the unused portion of the payment back to consumers.

One other company, VIATalk.com, was providing 6 months of reimbursement for SunRocket customers, though today it has been reduced to 3 months. Packet8 is providing a month of free service and no setup or equipment fees as well. Similar deals are available from other companies like Vonage.
