Google will shutdown Google Answers. It was launched as a beta release in April 2002, and went out of beta in mid 2003. It was a paid service where someone pays to get search conducted for him/her. Google kept 25% of the payout.
Google recently announced that it will stop taking any new questions by next week and shutdown the service by end of 2006.
The Google Answer service was not free, while Yahoo Answers is free. Also Google only allowed users to post a question, not answers. The answers were provided by a group of researchers, who got paid for responding.

Yahoo Answer service had grown rapidly since it launched the service in November 2005. After Google's announcement of closing down the service, Yahoo found an opportunity to invite the users and researchers to join Yahoo Answer service.
