Google will start offering domain name registrations for $10 per year for the domain extensions .com, .net, .biz and .info from today (Dec 15, 2006). This service will be offered in partnership with domain name registration strong holds - GoDaddy and eNom.
The domain registration business is already a crowded industry with high competition. Yahoo provides a free domain name with its web hosting subscription, the non-promotional rate being $9.95/year. This is consistent with the others in the web hosting business, where providing domain names registration for free or a nominal fee is seen as a way to lure customers to its web hosting business.
Customer acquisition costs in the web hosting business is expensive, therefore, providing a domain name below cost can still be profitable for these businesses. GoDaddy provides a similar deal for $1.99/year domain name with any non-domain product purchase.
Google's move into this area is to provide the users to a complete suite of software products from Google. Speculations have been that Google will provide unique identities to its blogger community by allowing them to use a domain name instead of a subdomain name such as myname.blogspot.com (Blogger is owned by Google).
The domains registered by a user on Google will automatically be set to work with its email, calender and instant messaging service.
