The domain name Vodka.com was recently bought by the Russian vodka manufacturing conglomerate Russian Standard Co. for $3 million dollars. Russian Standard controls more than 2/3 rd of the premium vodka market and entered the U.S. market in September 2005 by introducing the Imperia Brand.
Russian Standard is managed by the billionaire Roustam Tariko. Tariko invited Roy Messer, the seller of vodka.com and Sedo.com's Director of Brokerage, Christian Kalled, to come to St. Petersburg, Russia. Messer is a prominent investor in domain names and he had offered this domain for sale to Tariko early 2006 when Tariko offered $1 million dollars. Messer refused to sell at that price. His asking price of $5 million dollars finally was negotiated to $3 million. More details here - click here.
Vodka.com's price tag is among the highest ever revealed for a generic Web domain. In May, diamond.com reportedly sold for $7.5 million to jewelry retailer Ice.com. Business.com sold for $7.5 million in 1999.
Earlier this year, a source told Reuters that Sex.com had sold for around $12 million to a Boston-based company called Escom LLC, although the exact figure has never been disclosed.
Some of the other domains that were sold for 6 figures lately in 2006 are Date.org for $150,349 and loan.org for $105,500.
